We are delighted to support the HKGAA‘s Asian Gaelic Games (the “Games”) that will be held in Hong Kong at King’s Park, Kowloon. Since the last Games were held in Hong Kong in 2003 and 2004, the event has grown from strength to strength, adding in new clubs, countries and introducing thousands more adults and children to Gaelic Games. The Games this September will witness almost 1,000 men, women, and children from 24 clubs, more than 60 teams from across 14 Asian countries, and the latest addition being India. Together, we will be hosting a series of events that weekend that will be of great interest and enjoyment to everyone. The HKGAA are seeking to make this a weekend for everyone in the Irish community and develop greater interest in Irish society activities amongst the broader Hong Kong community, and all St Patrick’s Society members and their family and friends are welcome to be a full part of it.

His Excellency, the Ambassador of Ireland to China, Mr Declan Kelleher will be our guest of honour attending the events throughout the weekend. In addition, the Ambassadors of Ireland to India, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates have been invited to attend. The President of the GAA, Mr Christy Cooney will be attending, as will the legendary Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, the Honorary President of the Asian County Board, who will provide live commentary on all of the Finals on Sunday.

BOOK LAUNCH

Our very own SJ Chan, the Society's longest serving member, has published a book called "East River Column, Hong Kong Guerrillas in the Second World War and After".

Hong Kong's story in the Second World War has been predominately told as a story of the British Forces and their defeat on Christmas Day 1941. But there is another story. Chinese guerrilla forces who harassed the Japanese throughout the occupation, played a crucial part in the escapes of Hong Kong's prisoners of war camps and in rescuing allied airmen. This neglected part of Hong Kong's war is SJ's topic in this pioneering book informed by his many contacts with participants in the guerrilla warfare.

Published by the Hong Kong University Press, it is available in Hong Kong Book Centre, Page One and Dymocks.
